All About Cemberlitas Hammam Traditional Turkish Bath
The famous Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan constructed Cemberlitas Hamam in 1584. The hammam is still heated in the traditional manner by a furnace that burns wood chips, creating steam and warmth throughout the building. Cemberlitas Hamam has undergone two major restorations in recent decades while continuing to preserve its historic character and evocative atmosphere.
Cemberlitas Hamam was one of several traditional bathhouses that provided the people of Istanbul with a place for socializing as well as ritual cleansing before prayer. It is a traditional double bath with separate areas for men and women, symmetrically arranged parallel to one another within a nearly square building.
Inside Cemberlitas Hamam
Male and female guests enjoy the Turkish bath experience in completely separate facilities. Visitors first enter the dressing room, which is built on a square plan and covered by a large dome. Natural light enters through the lantern-covered oculus at the center of the dome, creating an impressive sight. A fountain in the middle of the room contributes to the relaxing atmosphere with the soothing sound and cooling effect of flowing water.
This area was traditionally used as a lounge where bathers could relax and socialize after bathing while enjoying coffee, sherbet, and other refreshments. It also served as a place for bathers to undress and safely store their belongings. Women visiting in groups would sometimes bring picnic baskets filled with treats such as dolma, stuffed grape leaves, and börek, savory pastries. Bathers would begin the experience by removing their clothes and wrapping themselves in a flat-woven cotton towel known as a peştamal.
Wrapped in their peştamal, bathers would then enter the warm room. This room features access to the facilities located on both sides of the square construction block, three small domed bays arranged perpendicularly, and several marble basins used for washing. Another doorway leads to the hot room, which forms the heart of the traditional hammam experience.
The hot room consists of one central twelve-sided space and four secondary bathing rooms. Mimar Sinan designed four niches within the corner spaces to solve the architectural challenge of transitioning from a square floor plan to a domed superstructure while creating a harmonious and concentrated interior.
Each dome-covered recess contains three washing basins and can accommodate bathers who prefer greater privacy. These areas are divided by walls slightly higher than human height. Two shallow niches on either side of each of the four private bathing-room entrances create the backdrop for the twelve columns supporting the central dome. The columns are evenly positioned and connected to the outer walls, strengthening the room’s sense of balance, symmetry, and architectural unity.
An elevated heated marble platform, known as the göbektaşı, stands in the middle of the hot room. Bathers can lie down on the warm marble surface and allow the heat and humid air to soften their skin and open their pores. Guests receiving a traditional treatment are generally prepared for the scrub after spending approximately 30 minutes in the warm environment.
Cemberlitas Hamam also features striking geometric black-and-white marble inlays. Natural light enters the hot room through numerous small openings in the dome, which are sealed with glass cups and create a distinctive illuminated atmosphere inside the hammam.
